This is my daughter Grace, just a few hours after her open-heart surgery. The photo's title has a double meaning - she's literally holding onto my wife Megan's finger, and figuratively holding on to life. Fortunately, she has made a complete recovery and is doing fabulously.
The judge in the KSCC competition was the photo editor of the local newspaper. He thought this photo did a good job of grabbing the viewer's attention, and tugging at their emotion and sympathy.
