I've read on the web that I need to buy some Eclipse Cleaning Fluid and Pec Pads to clean my digital SLR camera's sensor. But I live in Australia - I can't find a local supplier, and overseas companies won't ship it to me. Do you know where I can get some?
This question comes up a lot in newsgroups, forums, and at camera club meetings. I spent a lot of time trying to find an Australian supplier for the Eclipse Cleaning Solution, or an alternative product to use. I didn't have much luck at all.
At one stage I even investigated importing a case of Eclipse bottles myself and selling it via my web site and/or eBay, but the logistics of shipping and handling it were too hard. Eclipse is primarily made up of methanol, which is inflammable and toxic. Methanol is also an alcohol, so it has that whole bunch of government controls as well.
Anyway, I've finally found a supplier (Nulab) that can deliver Eclipse Cleaning Solution within Australia for AUD$22 per bottle (with 10 free Pec Pads) plus AUD$10 per order for postage. They can also include a bag of 100 Pec Pads for about AUD$20. Give them a ring on 1300-303-320.
This price is not cheap, but Eclipse is almost impossible to get in Australia and a single bottle should last you ages. You only need to use a couple of drops per cleaning cycle.
The other thing you'll need to clean your digital SLR's sensor is a tool to wrap the Pec Pad around. I highly recommend the SensorSwipe, which costs USD$10.95 including shipping to Australia. The only way to pay for that is via PayPal - if you don't have a PayPal account, I can help. You can pay me AUD$20 via bank deposit, personal cheque, bank cheque or money order and I'll organise have one shipped to you. Email me if you're interested.
All the instructions for cleaning your CMOS / CCD sensor using these products can be found on this site. I take no responsibility for the accuracy of the instructions or for any damage you might do to your camera. That said, I've used this technique myself and have never had a problem.
